Two Nails

This poem originally appeared in Time of Singing in Spring 1997. The cross it refers to is a pendant I still have made for me from a friend I knew from church in the early nineties.

Two Nails

I finger the edges of it
on a chain around my neck.
I remind myself with
the sharp points that
I am not conquered,
that I am not to forget
His victory is mine.

Loneliness, tears
a moment’s despair
comforted by nails
forged into a cross
I wear as a pendant.

With wonder I raise eyes
from myself to Him:
risen, seated in heaven.
I claim life over death.
I claim hope.

  1. Lovely poem, Darlene. So appropriate as we enter Lent and the run-up to Easter.

  2. Hi Darlene, This is another poem of yours that I read again and again during my mother’s “last” years. So good to reread now. She is with God, and we shall meet again, at His appointed time…

    Thank you!

Thanks for the poignant reminder!! Love, Dianne

  4. Darlene, when you publish a book PLEASE I want to buy at least 1 copy! You are a fine poet! 🙂

    • I’ll post something on my site when I do get around to putting together a new volume. I have some older selfmade booklets I have done in past but am currently out of those and the computer I used for them is “due for repairs”.

  5. Reblogged this on Darlene's Poetical Pursuits and commented:
