Flag Colors

Flag Colors

The mailbox garden by chance
or circumstance, happenstance
serendipity…
developed, evolved its own
sense of patriotism in ’01.
Vinca flowing in a white wave
of purity, innocence
hugged the curb.
And in the heart beat of July heat
spikes of electric blue
topped the newest introduction:
hummingbird sage
with wave after wave
of intense cobalt buds.
And in the height of terror
pineapple sage’s scarlet red
flamed anger, pain
bringing it together
the flag colors of an
American dream—
no postage due.
